Mottled orange-gray bark, good scarlet red fall color on ivy like
leaves distinguish this tree. Shows good drought and disease resistance.
Fall for the fall color.
Acer griseum, PAPERBARK MAPLE, Z 5,6,7, Bark
Mature height - 25'x15', Growth - Slow, Light - S, Soil -
Med., Origin - China
Fall Color - scarlet-orange
Every tree lover should have one of these, a default bark
tree. Propagation difficulties, and slower growth than say 'Red Maple' makes
them a bit more expensive, but don't settle for a quick cheap fix. Select
quality. This is perhaps our favorite medium large landscape tree. Exquisite peeling coppery bark,
that if one is giving to taking winter walks stands out in the landscape. Leaf
shows good
scarlet-orange fall color.
Barks only going to get better.
Turning fall.
Acer saccharum, SUGAR MAPLE, Z 4,5,6,7,8,
Mature height - 60'X45', Growth - Med., Light - S-Psh, Soil
- Dry-Med., Origin - Eastern US
Fall Color - amber-red
We could hardly not have the State tree of WV in our
collection. This tree should not be overlooked in the rush of A.rubrum
'Cultivars'. Its amber-red fall color creates a magnificent effect, similar to a
glowing log fire, and earlier than others, when you are still enjoying the
outside. Not forgetting that this is the prime source of Maple syrup. A
classic native.
Burning embers.
Acer triflorum, THREE FLOWERED MAPLE, Z4,5,6,7,8,
Bark
Mature height - 30'X20', Growth - Med., Light - S-Psh, Soil
- Med.., Origin - Korea
Fall Color - yellow-red
The US National Arboretum in DC is a refreshing place for tree nuts to meet
and see others who share their passion. If you drive around the park,
you will often see cars parked dangerously, their occupants running
across a field camera in hand; after spotting a tree. This is the tree that
occasioned for me the crazy park fever described above. A young specimen
displaying tight curling bark similar to River Birch. With age the bark will
become grayer and more plated but still handsome. Fall leaf color is similar to
'Sugar Maple'.
Fall leaf.
Young bark.
