Magnolia acuminata, CUCUMBER MAGNOLIA, Z 4,5,6,7,8 DR
Mature height - 60'x60', Growth - Med., Light - S-Psh-Sh, Soil
- Med., Origin - E / SE US
A tree often found in the woodland under story of WV where
its large leaves make it something of a curiosity. When
a little light is shed on it, and if one peaks to the tree tops there are
usually a few 60' whoppers around. Either a short lived garden tree or only suitable for the larger landscape.
Pyramidal and compact in youth it becomes wide spreading at maturity. We like it
for its up to 10'' long leaves, though these might represent a nuisance at clean up time
in an impeccably kept yard.
The parent of many improved yellow flowered cultivars, but its own are non showy.
Red fruit in fall is very attractive..
Fall.
Magnolia acuminataXdenudata, 'Butterflies', Z 4,5,6,7,8,
DR
Mature height - 18'x9', Growth - Med., Light - S-Psh, Soil
- Med.., Origin - Hybrid
Flower Color - yellow, Flower Time - May
Perhaps the best yellow magnolia. Neat pyramidal habit
makes a lovely garden tree, hardy, disease and pollution tolerant. Later to
bloom not usually subject of frost damage.
Picture speaks as thousand words.
Magnolias are such a joy and colossal in flower in early
Spring. It breaks my heart that sometimes mean olde Jack Frost will jump up; and
take our pleasure away after sometimes only a few days. The answer is to avoid
M. Stellata / Soulangiana varieties and check these varieties out whose flowers
won't turn to mush in cold snap.
Magnolia kobusXstellata, 'Leonard Messel', Z 4,5,6,7,8, DR
Mature height - 25'x15', Growth - Med., Light - S-Psh, Soil
- Med.., Origin - Hybrid
Flower Color - purple-pink, Flower Time - April
The Colonels tree, crossed in Sussex, England. 4-6''
fragrant flower that take frosts in their stride.
Magnolia lilifloraXstellata, 'Betty', Z 4,5,6,7, DR
Mature height - 18'x9', Growth - Med., Light - S-Psh, Soil
- Med.., Origin - Hybrid
Flower Color - purple-red, Flower Time - April
'Betty' is one of the 8 'Little Girl' Hybrids developed at
the US National Arboretum in the fifties. The idea being to produce a good
floral tree that would avoid frost damage. Rather cute that all the 'gals' are
named after wives and secretaries of the hybridiser's. Flowers open before the
leaves and produce a spectacular display with the odd bloom in summer.
Frost hardy flowers.
Magnolia macrophylla, Z 5,6,7,8, DR, Leaf size
Mature height - 60'X40', Growth - Med., Light - S, Soil -
Med.., Origin - East, SE US
Flower Color - white, Flower Time - June, Fall Color -
What is that ? Some think this Magnolia more like a 'banana
tree' with its oversize leaves. Foliage provides curiosity and interest. Produces leaves 12-32'' long, makes for interesting fall
cleanup, oversized tree in all respects, shy in flower but 10'' creamy white
flowers in June.
Magnolia sieboldii, OYAMA MAGNOLIA, Z 5,6,7, DR
Mature height - 12'x8', Growth - Med., Light - S-Psh, Soil
- Med., Origin - China, Japan, Korea
Lovely white, accented by red stamens in the flower center;
egg shaped blooms in May. Odd bloom throughout the summer, nice size for
garden. In our 'frost hollow' nursery we find leaves subject of damage, but
picks up again.

Magnolia virginiana, 'Moonglow', Z5,6,7,8,9, DR
Mature height - 35'x15', Growth - Med.-Fast, Light - S-Psh,
Soil - Med.-Wet., Origin - East, SE US
Flower Color - white frag, Flower Time - May, Fall Color -
Creamy white lemon scented flowers produced lightly in May
and sporadically throughout summer. Dark green leaf has silvery underside, that
is attractive ruffled by a breeze. Will
take wet.
A friend for summer.
