Thuja occiedentalis, EASTERN ARBORVITAE, 'Holmstrup', 3,4,5,6,7, column Mature height - 10'x3', Growth - Med., Light - S, Soil - Med., Origin - Eastern US The ubiquitous 'accent' , a neat little plant that makes a great little hedge or column. Easy to grow and worth thinking out of the box in placement rather than using it to frame entryways. Thuja occiedentalis, EASTERN ARBORVITAE, 'Rheingold', 3,4,5,6,7, gold hues Mature height - 5'x4', Growth - Med., Light - S, Soil - Med., Origin - Eastern US Love the changing with the season and hour the hues of gold this one throws out. New foliage in Spring can be almost lime green, going to gold and bronze in fall. Can be clipped as a hedge to make a rounder plant or grown as an upright specimen.
Thuja occiedentalis, EASTERN ARBORVITAE, 'Wansdyke Silver', 3,4,5,6,7, size Mature height - 8'x4', Growth - Slow, Light - S, Soil - Med., Origin - Eastern US Makes a lovely little garden tree. Flowing, graceful look, something like a 'hemlock' with creamy flecked arborvitae foliage. We grow several cultivars of Thuja plicata or WESTERN RED CEDAR. The species was grown for its durable timber in SW England and Ireland where I worked in Forestry. These areas have something in common with its native NW US habitat, a 'soft climate'. Despite its upbringing, these cultivars have all proven adaptable to the hot, humid and cold Eastern US. One of its great merits if you are a Christmas or anytime green clipper is its fragrant foliage. They are also regarded as being very disease resistant. You will read that deer don't like them, are experience is that maybe they are not fond of them but they will be eaten. Thuja plicata, 'Stoneham Gold', Z 5,6,7, Frag foliage Mature height - 10'x3', Growth - Med., Light - S-Psh, Soil - Med., Origin - NW US New growth adds golden edge to dark green interior. Nice size for screening. Thuja plicata, 'Virescens', Z 5,6,7, Frag. foliage Mature height - 30'x6', Growth - Med., Light - S-Psh, Soil - Med, Origin - NW US The promotion of 'Green Giant' has possibly left this one behind. We believe it is superior for screening in garden areas, as it keeps a tight shape and good green all year around. 'Green Giant' may soon outgrow a small garden whereas 'Virescens' will fit in and hang around a lot longer. Thuja plicata, 'Zebrina', Z 5,6,7, Frag foliage Mature height - 30'x10', Growth - Med., Light - S-Psh, Soil - Med., Origin - NW US Striped like a yellow zebra in Spring and Summer. Shows some browning in winter, but very durable conifer for use in larger landscape. One we have a good deal of affection for. Thuja plicataXstandishii, 'Green Giant', Z 5,6,7, fast Frag foliage Mature height - 30'x10', Growth - Fast, Light - S-Psh, Soil - Med., Origin - Hybrid There's a clamor about this one, but don't plant where your desire for a fast hedge may overcome you. Great for screening, disease and deer resistance. Fragrant foliage is nice for holiday decorating. May brown late winter. Thujopsis dolobrata, var.hondae, Z 5,6,7, textured foliage Mature height - 50'x20', Growth - Med., Light - S-Psh, Soil - Med., Origin - Japan A super large tree or an ample supply of seaweed like glossy green foliage. Foliage adds great texture to the garden and stays green in winter. We love this tree as it is so very different. Tends to spread at base, before assuming central leader and looking like a typical conifer. Thujopsis dolobrata, 'Varigata', Z 5,6,7, textured creamy foliage Mature height 25'X15', Growth - Med., Light - S-Psh, Soil - Med., Origin - Japan Makes a great specimen, with its flecked creamy feathery foliage. Smaller than the species, makes a great small garden specimen. In Zone 5 the variegation tends to brown in winter but comes back in summer. |
