We have seen various mass marketers alternate between 'Britzensis' and 'Flame', as being redder than the other. Either the
quality of their printing is poor or photos are touched up to make plants look
the color of a STOP sign. We don't see much difference in color, we would describe
both as being orange-red, but would say this. If you want to produce
copious amounts of 'red'
sticks, choose 'Britzensis'.
If you have a possible maintenance problem from a large tree, above or
underground, and want a small tree with orange red tips, and nice yellow fall
leaf
color choose 'Flame'. ( In a small garden we would recommend our Cornus,
'red twig dogwood' varieties for stick production).
Salix alba, 'Britzensis', Z 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,
DR/Cut/Twig/Bask
Mature height - 12'x12', Growth - Fast, Light - S, Soil -
Med.-Wet, Origin - Europe, Asia
Lets face it this is really a 50' tree. Sometimes grown for
fast shelter,
we recommend you treat it as a shrub. Cut back to the ground, coppice, or cut of
at shoulder height when established, known as pollarding;
for prodigious supply of orange red sticks during Winter for use in floral
crafts. Winter stick color is orange-red, and is very eye catching particularly with
a glint of sun in the air.
Orange red sticks or large tree.
Salix alba, , Flame, Z 3,4,5,6,7, DR, Orn, twig,
Mature height - 20'X10', Growth – Med.-Fast, Light - S, Soil -
Med.- Wet, Origin - US
This selection will stay as a smaller tree, but only the
newer growth then will be orange- red. Can be coppiced and pollarded annually to
produce ornamental sticks. Certainly is slower growing than 'Britzensis'. May
not be an alba selection at all. Good fall yellow leaf color.
Salix Alba, 'Tristis', Z 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 DR/Hon
Mature height - 50'x30', Growth - Fast, Light - S, Soil -
Med.-Wet, Origin - Europe, Asia
Golden branched weeping willow. Very early in leaf when
they emerge almost lime green, before turning green for the summer. Catkins
small but given the eventual size of the tree useful for insects. Leaf stays
very late and sometimes gives a yellow fall color. The shape is rather spreading,
and branches arch and fall gracefully to the ground. The newer branches retain
good color and with the shape add considerable winter interest.
Salix alba, 'Vitellina', Z 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,
DR/Bask/sticks
Mature height - 12'x12', Growth - Fast, Light - S, Soil -
Med.-Wet, Origin - Europe, Asia
Another alba variety that left to its own devices makes a 50ft tree that is often planted for fast windbreak
and conservation work. This is one of the oldest willows in cultivation, we
highly recommend its golden yellow stems for
basketry and floral design work. Manage by either coppicing or pollarding.

cornfield in winter.
Salix babylonica, GREEN WEEPING WILLOW, , Z 4,5,6,7,8 DR, Orn,
Mature height - 50'x30', Growth – Fast, Light - S, Soil -
Med.-Wet, Origin - Europe, Central Asia
There is confusion over is it, or isn't it the real 'babylonica'.
It seems from our reading that the ancient weeping willows of the fabled hanging
gardens of Babylon were actually Populars ! This trees older bark is brown,
younger green, branches go at 45' from trunk and secondary branches hang steeply
down.
Salix chaenomeloides, JAP. PUSSY WILLOW, Z 4,5,6,7,8,
DR/Cut/Hon/Catkins
Mature height - 12'x12', Growth - Fast, Light - S, Soil -
Med.-Wet, Origin - Japan
One of our favorite willows for catkins and all round
performance. Boasts silvery gray foliage that stays attractive throughout
summer, showy red buds in Winter, from which emerge large rabbits foot size
catkins in February. My young son loves 'softies' and has had several stuffed
toys and velvet articles that at different times he has been attached to. I was
carrying several of these plants in the car, whose heads in full catkin poked
past his seat. During the journey all the catkins were taken off the branches
and rubbed on his cheek. Another example of the costs of bringing up children !
Cheek strokers.
Red buds like rose hips.
Salix cinerea, TRI COLOR WILLOW, 'Varigata' Z
4,5,6,7,8, DR
Mature height - 12'x12', Growth - Fast, Light - S, Soil -
Med.-Wet, Origin - Japan
Bright green leaves splotched with white and yellow that
lighten a border or are nice added to arrangements.
Salix daphnoides, VIOLET WILLOW, , Z 5,6,7,8, DR, Orn,
Bask., twig, catk., Hon.
Mature height - 50'x30', Growth – Fast, Light - S, Soil -

New stem growth is purple, with fine ornamental catkins.
Good willow for basketry. Manage by coppicing or pollarding.
Salix discolor, AMERICAN PUSSY WILLOW, Z

Mature height - 25'x12', Growth - Fast, Light - S, Soil -

Reddish buds open in mid March to reveal white-gray
catkins.
Salix melonostachys, BLACK PUSSY WILLOW, , Z 5,6,7,
DR, Orn, catk., Hon.
Mature height - 6'x6', Growth – Fast, Light - S, Soil -
Med.-Wet, Origin - Japan
A plant that offers a lot to the floral clipper, size makes
and easy garden fit and winter color can make great contrasts if sited well. In
winter the stems color purple black, followed by the same colored catkins.
Catkins mature with red antlers that change to yellow. Foliage that stays easy green,
and small size make this a plant that will fit into a small garden.
Salix intergra, VARIGATED WILLOW, Hakuro Nishiki, Z
4,5,6,7,8, DR, Orn, twig, catk., Hon.
Mature height -
6'x6', Growth – Fast, Light - S, Soil - Med.-Wet, Origin - Japan
This is a very versatile plant
that offers a lot through the seasons and one that we are becoming to
appreciate more and more. Whilst the winter twig is not going to rival a red
twig dogwood, there's some color there. Late small catkins come in useful in
arranging when some of our larger catkins are spent. The variegated leaf is its
main attribute. New leaves emerge salmon pink aging to white variegation. At the top of its range may require a little shade to look
good. Will benefit from pruning early spring, and even in season if leaf
variegation fades as new leaf variegation
is its most pronounced asset. Often seen in garden centers sold as a standard.
As a 'bush' but can be coersed into several forms !
